Dürrenmatt, who was educated in Zürich and Bern, became a full-time writer in 1947. Friedrich Dürrenmatt was born in Konolfingen, near Berne, the son of Reinhold Dürrenmatt, a Protestant minister, and Hulda (Zimmermann) Dürrenmatt; at home she was the authority figure. As the son of a village minister, Dürrenmatt felt in his childhood somewhat of an outcast.
